This activity uses carved railroad track turns that funnel out from shallow fall line arcs to round medium radius carved turns. Once reaching a medium radius sized turn, the skier maintains a consistent and manageable speed through turn shape (no run-away speed, avoid progression to long radius turns).
Why Will This Activity Be Useful:
This activity helps transfer the Edge Control skills developed in Railroad Tracks to linked Medium Radius Carved Turns. Through practice, the skier will begin to develop the ability to modify skill blends by adjusting Duration, Intensity, Rate and Timing (D.I.R.T) of movements to change ski performance and the turn outcome.
What the Skis Do (EFFECT):
• Skis first carve shallow arc-to-arc railroad track turns. Tails follow tips.
• Over time and distance, the turn become larger, eventually making a series or of round, consistent size medium radius carved turns
• Edge angles of skis are highest in shaping phase of turns
• Edge angles are adjusted continuously throughout the turn
• Skis remain parallel relationship and stance width is consistent
• Skis progressively bend more into rounder linked carved dynamic turns
How the Body Moves (CAUSE):
• Railroad track turns are created primarily from foot/ankle tipping movements
• Flexion/extension of the legs contribute to inclination as turn radius increases
• The legs tip and turn under a stable pelvis and upper body
• Flexion/extension movements keep the CoM aligned fore/aft and laterally to the base of support
• Flexion/extension movements and upper body angulation directs pressure toward the outside ski.
• Terrain that progressively steepens from Green to Blue
• Green/Blue terrain is also acceptable
• This is an opportunity to tune into how far you can push your skills in a safely controlled manner and identify where gaps exist that need more work.
• Experiment with dialing-up by focusing on just one aspect of D.I.R.T. at a time.
• Become aware of inter-relationships of those variables that seem to need to be blended together.
• Determine for your skiing what focus produces your favorite result.
• Get feedback on performance outcome of different focuses.
• Back-off or work on a mid-point turn shape that challenges, yet hones your skills, then step it up one more notch.
• Work to shorten the number of build-up RRT to dynamic MR carved turns
• Find the key cue(s) that can get you directly to MR performance turn mode.
